Archive FAQ (16)

My work is archived, but I don’t remember signing up at the archive, what’s going on?

You gave me permission to archive your work, so I created an admin-backed user with your LJ username to archive your work. I used the email address that you were using at the time – but remember I’ve had permission since around 2002/2003, so the email in the archive may not be up to date.

Oh, groovy. Well, I want to take control of my account, what do I do?

First, go to the archive, and go to the login page and hit the “Lost Password” link. Input your email address, and if you’re told that the email addy is not in our database, then you have to email me to ask me to change the email address.

Email Me something like this (with “Queertet Archive Account” as the subject line):

Dear Star,

I want to take control of my account at Queertet, my details are:

Email: Your new email address that you want to be linked to your account.

Username: The username that you are currently using on the archive.

Additionally, I would like to change my username to ____

The last line is only if you want to be known as something else. Also, clicking that link should automatically generate the subject and body of the email. If it does, space it out nicely for me.

Some of my work is missing, it was there before!/The title of my work is up, but the page is empty!

Argh, sometimes this happens when you move servers. Please could you re-upload your work?

How do I get started on the archive?

After registering, or getting me to release your details (see above), then go to the archive, and choose “Account Info”, from there you can edit your details (your real name, your password, link to a user icon, etc), upload a story, edit your story, and loads of other stuff like that.

I want to upload a story, but it looks a little complicated, and I heard a rumour that you’re an evil beeyatch from hell when people upload to the wrong place.

I am an evil beeyatch from hell when people upload to the wrong place. That much is very true. I spent ages sorting out the sub-categories so that people could find what they want easily. So here’s how to stay on the right side of me. Let’s just say you’re uploading a story that centres on five characters, with ships of Charlie/Adam, Julie/Portman, and has a lot of Fulton as a single guy in it too.

Go to “Account Info”

Click “Add New Story”

Fill in your title and summary, then we move on to category, which is where it gets complicated. Choose “Slash Fics” from the drop-down list, but do not click “Select”. Now, click on the drop-down menu again, and it should list all the sub-categories for the Slash category (Charlie/Adam, Fulton/Portman, etc). Click “Charlie/Adam”, now you can click “Select”.

Now you should click on “Straight Fics” (again, do not click “Select”), and choose Julie/Portman from the drop-down list, as before.

Repeat the process to chose all the main characters for Character Fics (Charlie, Adam, Fulton, Portman, Julie).

Now you should be able to choose your genres, warnings (if appropriate) and characters. Until you select a category, only very few characters will be available for you to choose.

Fill in the rating, tick the box if it’s complete, and fill in all the rest of the details. Choose “Preview” just to make sure it looks all right, then “Add Story” when you’re ready.

My story is a challenge fic or part of a series, what do I do about that?

Go to “Challenges” in the navigation block, choose your challenge. Under the details, there should be a link that says, “Respond to the Challenge!”, click it, and you should have a list of your stories. Tick the boxes beside any fics that correlate to that challenge and press submit.

This works much the same if you want to add a story to a series only, obviously, you click on “Series” instead of “Challenges”.

How do I add a chapter to an existing story?

Go to “Account Info” then go to “Manage Stories”, this will bring up a list of your current stories, from there you can choose “Add New Chapter”. Your information (pairing, category, rating, etc) should be pre-selected. If not, it’s the same method as before.

Help! What’s html? How do I make it pretty?

Unless you’ve got the patience of a saint when it comes to formatting, I suggest you paste your fic into a notepad file and upload that. You can still use html in there and there’s less chance of the formatting getting screwed.

Formatting & html

<b>bold</b>

<i>italic</i>

<u>underline</u>

To make a break I suggest you either use something like this

<p>*** or the <hr> tag, which looks like this

Also, we have enabled TinyMce on the archive, which means you can format your story in a simpler way, it’s your basic Word interface.

Are there any issues with chapter length?

The script is quite forgiving, and therefore you can write long chapters. The upper limit is now 16,000 words, the minimum is 100 words.

Characters? Eh?

With regard to the Characters option, chose only the main characters of the story, as this serves as a search function, if Dwayne is in the story for approximately one sentence per three chapters, don’t list him as a main character. This means Dwayne fans won’t find your story, then review with “Where the heck was Dwayne?”

Genres? Eh?

Genre is pretty straightforward. I mean, everyone here’s used ff.net, right?

What rating system do you use?

We use the ratings system from MPAA. The ratings in this archive are as follows:

G – suitable for all

PG – suitable for everyone with a slight teenage edge to the story.

PG-13 – suitable only for older teens, probably focusing on romance and love.

R – suitable for a mature audience, may have references to sex, violence… anything that mums don’t want their kids to see.

NC-17 – suitable only for an adult (this age differs in each country, so if you are an adult in your country, feel free to read it) – this will contain graphic scenes of smut or violence or any other nasty.

How do I mark a story as complete?

To mark a story as completed (by default, the archive assumes the story is incomplete) Click on Edit/Delete stories, this will bring up a list of all your fics. Next to the title, it says “Completed: No” – click on the No and it will change to a Yes.

Help me! I’ve still got errors!

I’m going to set out some guidelines for how to get issues on the archive resolved. It’s worth saying that trying more than once usually solves the problem – and obviously, try checking all your chapters, as set out above – but there are exceptions, so if you do have issues, please do the following:

  • Email Me (if the subject line is not automatic, please use The Mighty Queertet Archive as your subject line.
  • Tell me the name you use on the archive – signing an email “Lizzie” when on here you are “Elizabeth_1987” does not help me.
  • Tell me what you were trying to do (e.g., change your fic from The General Fiction category to Slash Fiction, changing the summary, etc).
  • Tell me what you were hoping to achieve after the change (eg: I was moving my story “Without You” from The General Fiction category to the Straight Fics category).
  • Tell me what the problem is exactly. Saying “it won’t work” helps no-one. Tell me what error you were given (eg: “You have missed out the following fields”, etc) – copy and paste it.
  • Tell me the name of your fic in full.
  • Tell me if there are missing chapters – while you are familiar with your stories, I have only probably ever read them just once, and it was probably when I validated them, so quite a long time ago.
  • If you do not call your chapters “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2”, etc, tell me the name of the chapters and what order they should be in.
  • As a side note, my name is Sarah, it would be nice if you greeted me in your email. *grin*

Coding (3)

What scripts do you use on this site?

I use eFiction on the archive. It’s a bloody brilliant script, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to maintain a large archive without tearing their hair out. I downloaded a very simple skin to work around – having found that the defaults were really tricky to work with. Every layout starts with that skin now. The skin is called Minimalist, and you can find it here. However, you should be aware that the skin is for eFiction v2, and the latest, and most stable release is version 3.

I use phpBB on the forum, and use many hacks from phpBBHacks.com. The biggest ones are the Karma Hack, the Cash Mod and all the shops.

I use a hand-coded blog to do my updates with, following the tutorial at CodeGrrl.com, which is a thoroughly brilliant site. Very useful to someone who is passionately in love with using php, but hasn’t got a clue where to start.

Now I use WordPress along with some lovely plugins, I particularly like the FAQ plugin.

Where did you learn?

I learnt html from a book in 2001. Once you have a basic understanding of html, it’s pretty easy to get going on everything else. I followed css (cascading style sheets) tutorials on the internet, and there was a chapter covering it in the book. This site, W3 Schools, is probably the best place to learn anything css-wise.

I also learnt php and mySQL. I have three books, and only one of them is helpful. Do not waste your money on “PHP and mySQL for Dummies”, it just does not cover what you’d want to learn in order to build a website. I did find that “PHP Essentials” by Julie C. Meloni and “Web Database Applications with PHP and mySQL” by Hugh E. Williams and David Lane have been very helpful. One downside though, is that “PHP Essentials” does have errors in its tutorial codes, which makes it very frustrating. You spend hours copying the code and double-checking it, just about understanding it, only to find out that it’s got an error, and you don’t know where or why. However, you can download the codes, which helps.

Also, CodeGrrl.com is an awesome resource. The tutorials are easy to follow, and everyone on the forums are just so helpful and wonderful. It’s a really great community.

Fanfic Awards FAQ (11)

What are the fan fiction awards? What happens?

They are something that happens every 6 months (roughly), they run in May/June and November/December. Some time in May or November (usually the last week of the month, but this is subject to change if my life is hectic) I will open up the nomination forms. The nomination forms stay open for a week. At the end of that week, open up the voting page (also for a week), we use the votes to shortlist 3 (sometimes more if there are ties) fics that go on to the final, then you vote for who wins first, second and third place.

Why does it say MightyDucksMovies awards when your site is called Queertet?

While the awards are hosted on my site, it’s actually a branch off from the MightyDucksMovies list. You must be a member to nominate and vote in these rounds. It’s not me being elitist, it’s just a sure-fire way to make sure that people don’t get all their friends to vote for them. These are awards, voted for by fans and writers, it’s not a popularity contest.

I’m not a member of the list. What now?

The lists are defunct, and the awards would be run here if there was any interest.  Let me know if you are interested.

What can I nominate?

Any fic that has won an award previously CANNOT be nominated in that category again. Click here for a short list of winners. Or the Make Nominations Form tells you which fics you cannot nominate for each category.

Unfinished fics are eligible for ALL AWARDS EXCEPT Best Overall Fic.

You can nominate two fics in each category. The categories are:

  • Best Overall Full Length Fic
  • Best Overall Short Story
  • Best Slash (fic with gay pairings)
  • Best Het (straight, no slash as the main story)
  • Best Duck Only (no original characters in main parts)
  • Best Angst
  • Best Comedy
  • Best Romance
  • Best Original Character

You can nominate any fic that you have not written or co-written. This goes for original characters, if the OC doesn’t belong to you, but you have written him/her, you cannot nominate him/her. eg. I was not allowed to nominate Maya Hansen. Victory Thru Tears created her, but I have written her many times.

You can nominate fics that you have beta’d. The story is the intellectual property of the writer, you (the beta) just helped them get there. As long as you didn’t write any of it, you can nominate. (and saying something like ‘if you rephrased paragraph 3 to ___’ doesn’t count as writing, that’s still beta-ing)

While you have to be a member of the list to nominate, you can nominate any fic that takes your fancy. The writers don’t have to be members (but they will have to join if they want to nominate in return).

Another thing – if you’re nominating someone who’s not on the list then we will let them know, but it would be nice if you told that author too, since you’re probably speaking to them more than we are! Please add the url of where we will find their fic or their email addy if they’re not using ff.net!

Why are there two Best Overall Categories now?

Because some people write amazing one-shot stories, one chapter to write an entire story, whereas others write amazing 10+ chapter fics. Could you really compare something like Breaking Hazel (which is a simply huge fic) to Empty Lockers? They’re both fantastic stories, but they really shouldn’t be competing against each other. So the Best Overall Short Story category is now for the one chapter finished fics and the Best Overall Full Length Story is for fics that are more than one chapter. It’s fairly simple – for anyone who isn’t involved with the coding of this site. Basically in a fit of fairness I’ve lumbered myself with more work. *grins*

How do I nominate?

There are two ways. The first is to nominate on the website on the Make Nominations page. The second is to send an email to MightyDucksMovies-owner@yahoogroups.com – make sure that’s exactly where it’s going, I try to keep the nominations under wraps until it’s voting time. Obviously, I let the authors of nominated fics know that they’ve been nominated.

If you decide to go for the email option, please make it nice and easy on me and be clear with your votes. And make sure you let me know your email address – make sure it’s the one you’re subscribed to the list with.

Don’t send something like this:
I’m voting for title by author for best slash and title by author for this and title by author for that and title by author…

It’s confusing for me. Yes, I’m thick.

Do send something like this:
Best Slash:
Title by author
Title by author

Best Het:
Title by author
Title by author

…and so on

Why are you so obsessed with having my email address? Are you gonna stalk me?

Nope, I’m not gonna stalk you (unless you’re Carla, but that’s another story). I need your email address to check you’re a member of the list. For reasons, see above. I cannot stress enough that you must let me know the email addy that you’re subscribed to the list with. Otherwise you’ll get an email from me or your nominations might be deleted, again, see above for why.

What can I vote for?

As above, you can vote for anything (or any OC) that you didn’t write. You do not have to vote for the fics you nominated. In the first round of voting, you can vote for two fics. In the second round you can only vote for one.

Ooh! I’ve been nominated! What now?

To be honest, not much. You’ll have to wait for the votes to come in to see if you won. I email authors to let them know they’ve been nominated, but I just don’t have time to let them know personally that they have or have not made it to the next round. I announce it to the MightyDucksMovies list. However, help yourself to a Nomination Button. There’s six general buttons (that just say that you’ve been nominated for an award) and a button for each category eg. ‘Nominated for Best Slash’. I don’t make personalised nomination buttons (eg. ‘Title by Author was nominated for Best Slash’) for the simple fact that I don’t have time.

If you’ve been nominated, you can still nominate and vote – as long as you’re not nominating/voting for yourself. Simple, huh? *grins*

You said that the votes closed on Friday, but you took the page down on Thursday

I’m in England, which means that I’m about 6 hours ahead of most people (given that about 97% of the list is American), that’s probably why. Keep an eye on the list. I usually announce that the votes/nominations pages are being closed in x amount of hours.

Can I help?

Yes please! Generally I run the awards and my wife, Charisma aka Queen C, helps me. If you really want to help, drop a line to me and let me know what you’d be willing to do. What I need helpers in is generally:

  • Going to ff.net and hunting down the urls (web links) for the fan fic that has been nominated
  • Emailing authors to let them know they’ve been nominated
  • Double-checking email addresses
  • Counting votes
  • Helping me not crack up (this usually involves emailing me and offering me a hug or chocolate – though to be fair, this is Charisma’s job)
  • Making winner/nomination graphics
  • Double-checking everything I do

Fanfic FAQ (5)

I’ve got a really great idea for a fanfic, will you write it?

No, sorry. I don’t do requests. From time to time, I do take challenges and suggestions, but I can’t write to someone else’s absolute guidelines. Feel free to send me a challenge that I can pick up and run with, but I can’t guarantee I’ll take it.

Wasn’t there going to be a sequel to Shoebox?

Yes, there was. “Tales from the Breadbox” was always in the pipeline, but somehow I never got around to it. It’s planned out – this is the only fic I’ve ever done chapter outlines on, I have pages and pages of notes, and I have 10,000 words actually written. However, I don’t see the point in posting it if I have no intention of finishing it. I’m still quite proud of Shoebox, and I don’t want to taint the general good response I got on it with a couple of chapters of a sequel that will probably not be finished. Obviously, should I ever get thoroughly inspired, then I will certainly start posting.

Will you ever finish “Sun”?

Absolutely not. If you read the question about where is Vic, you will know that she’s got other things happening at the moment, and coming back to the Ducks fandom is not something she’s all that interested in. As for me, returning to the original Queertet series is something I have definitely dug my heels in over. I don’t want to do it. I don’t like the series, I don’t like the style, I don’t like the bland, inter-changeable characters. I’m just not interested. Which is why I started to write Queertet Revisited.

Why does this site still stand, then?

This site still stands because it was once a busy place, and quite the hub of the fandom – well, probably not the fandom, but a friendly little clique of writers who became my friends. I’m still in contact (however fleeting) with most of the people I have met though writing in the Ducks fandom. Besides, every so often I get inspired and start writing again! Though, I have to say, this site probably won’t see many updates from now on.

General FAQ (3)

What happened to the “Vic” in “Vic N’ Star”?

She’s a busy lass, and she has moved on in the world. Let’s face it, it’s not as if I’m still writing all that much fan fic nowadays either. If you see her, tell her I said howdy. We just don’t see that much of each other any more, we’ve both got different things happening.

So, is Carla the new Vic?

No, Carla is not the “new” anyone. I have known Carla for years, long before I met Vic. She’s new – well, newer – to the fandom, but not to me. It just took me awhile to convince her to come and play in this sandbox.

Site FAQ (4)

Will you archive my work/fan art?

Sure, if you have fanfiction, just sign up at the Archive and get going… if you run into any problems, the Archive FAQ should help. If it’s fan art, then email it to me – make sure the picture is in jpg form, and not bmp. bmp files are huge, and they will take me hours to download. If you have a bmp, then open it in any graphics programme (even MS Paint will do) and do a “Save As” and choose .jpg as the suffix.

    About

Welcome to The Mighty Queertet, a fansite for the Mighty Ducks, with a heavy slant on slash fic (though het and gen is more than welcome - I ship Charlie/Linda harder than I ship Charlie/Adam, but not quite as much as I ship Charlie/Fulton, just for context!)

The site was established on 21st April 2002, so we're pretty old now, and not so much down with the kids, the archive doesn't update much, mostly this is now a nostalgia site, but if you want to add your fic or say something, please do so.
